Mt. Bethel's Church History

Mt. Bethel Baptist Church was organized in 1876 under the leadership of Rev. Mark, who served for about 20 years. Following his tenure, the church welcomed several pastors including Rev. Berry Wilder, R.L. White-Woodson, and I.S. Jester, with Jester leading in the final years at Midtown. The church experienced significant growth under Rev. Taylor's leadership, during which time Mt. Bethel was rebuilt.

Rev. H.G. Gilbert served the church faithfully for ten years. He was succeeded by Rev. A.J. Walker, and later Rev. C.L. McNease, who reorganized the church from the Mt. Bethel school. Under McNease's guidance, the church continued to grow peacefully and he touched the hearts of many diverse individuals with his wise counsel and strong messages.

In 1969, the congregation called Rev. O.D. Tyler as their pastor. Under his leadership, the church was reorganized and the present-day Mt. Bethel was built. Various additions were made to the church, including a church bus, bulletin board, phone, coke machine, and new pew cushions. Rev. Tyler licensed three ministers: Rev. Irvin Holloman, Rev. John Lee Ramson, and Rev. Rudolph Duffey. He also organized three choirs: the O.D. Tyler Male Chorus, the O.D. Tyler Gospel Choir, and the Inspirational Choir.

The church saw further expansion in 1990 with the addition of a fellowship hall, steam tables, a Pastor’s study, bathrooms, a cloakroom, a storage room, a first aid-station, central heating and air, and a walkway around the church perimeter. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the church made several purchases including a van, typewriter, copy machine, and riding mowers. The church community continued to grow with the addition of new members such as Deacon Elroy and Sis. Jackie Tucker, Rev. Jeffery Ruffin and his wife Sis. Lavern Ruffin, among others.

On November 3, 2019, Pastor O.D. Tyler celebrated 50 years of dedicated service. After many years of faithful service, he transitioned on June 6, 2020. On January 16, 2021, the members elected Rev. Gregory Tyler II as their new pastor. Under Pastor Tyler's leadership, the church has flourished in numerous areas. Membership has significantly increased, and the church has embraced technological advancements, including upgraded systems and online platforms. Spiritually, the congregation continues to deepen its faith and community bonds. Financially, the church is stronger than ever, enabling substantial building and grounds improvements to enhance the church environment for all.

Today, Mt. Bethel Baptist Church continues to grow and thrive under Pastor Tyler's leadership, embarking on a new and prosperous season in its rich history.
